Italy launches 2026-2027 respiratory virus vaccination campaigns
Italy is launching widespread vaccination campaigns for the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season. In Lombardy, the influenza vaccination campaign begins on October 1, prioritizing pregnant women, children aged 6 months to 17 years, individuals over 60, and healthcare workers. General public access follows on October 12 through pharmacies and vaccination centers.
Parallel efforts are addressing Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). In Valle d'Aosta, free prophylaxis for bronchiolitis is being provided to infants under one year old. Experts are also highlighting a shift toward maternal immunization, where vaccinating pregnant women provides a biological bridge of antibodies to protect newborns during their most vulnerable months.
The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has authorized nine different influenza vaccines for this season, updated to match circulating strains. Health officials warn of a potential high volume of respiratory cases, with projections suggesting between 12 and 14 million infections involving influenza, RSV, SARS-CoV-2, and rhinovirus.
