Italy prison police officers attacked in Genoa hospital and Reggio Calabria prison

A detainee at Genoa’s San Martino Hospital, already linked to six prior assaults, violently attacked a member of the Polizia Penitenziaria while the inmate was being treated for psychiatric issues. The autonomous prison police union (Sappe) condemned the incident, saying the offender should have been moved to a high‑security facility and demanding better protective equipment for staff.

In a separate episode, a prison police officer in Reggio Calabria suffered “gravissime” contusions after being assaulted inside the prison. The Osapp union called the event the latest in a series of attacks, blaming chronic overcrowding and the lack of clear operational guidelines, and urged the Ministry of Justice and the prison administration (DAP) to launch immediate investigations and introduce robust safety protocols.
