Amendolara protest draws thousands demanding action on caporalato after migrant workers' killings

Thousands of people gathered in the Calabrian town of Amendolara on 6 June 2026 to protest the brutal killing of four migrant agricultural workers. The demonstration was organised by the CGIL trade union and the FLAI federation and was attended by union leaders Maurizio Landini and Giovanni Mininni, PD secretary Elly Schlein, Sinistra Italiana leader Nicola Fratoianni, and a delegation of Five Star Movement politicians including deputy Vittoria Baldino and MEP Pasquale Tridico. Participants laid two wreaths at the service area where the victims were burned and called for a "moral and social uprising" against caporalato, urging stricter anti‑caporalato legislation, preventive seizure of companies that exploit workers, and a review of the Bossi‑Fini immigration law. Schlein demanded strengthening the caporalato law, while Fratoianni criticised the government for using less than 10 % of the €200 million PNRC funds intended to eliminate illegal settlements. The protest highlighted widespread concern over labour exploitation in Italian agriculture and called for decisive policy action.
