Italy pushes development of regional airports in Calabria and Apulia

In Calabria, Lega deputy Simona Loizzo praised Minister Matteo Salvini for signing an agreement with ENAC, ENAC Servizi and the regional government to upgrade the Scalea airfield into a territorial airport. The project is part of the national airport plan and the Regional Air Mobility scheme, which aims to improve local economies and tourism by strengthening smaller air hubs.

In Apulia, representatives of Fratelli d'Italia met with Aeroporti di Puglia president Antonio Vasile to discuss infrastructure gaps at Brindisi‑Salento Airport. While passenger traffic has risen 31.5% over three years, the airport still lags behind Bari in capacity and connectivity. Officials highlighted the need for a direct rail link, expanded parking, and upgraded passenger facilities. The regional government has earmarked €5 million for co‑financing airport operations and recent investments include runway upgrades, a remote control tower and new ground‑handling areas, but further steps are needed to increase flights and reduce fares.
