Italy expands highway EV charging network with 82 ultra‑fast stations

Italian authorities and private operators announced the inauguration of 82 new ultra‑fast electric‑vehicle charging points across seven motorway service areas, including the Montepulciano Est site. The stations deliver up to 400 kW, can recharge a vehicle to 80 % in about 20 minutes, and are equipped with battery storage and photovoltaic canopies. Massimo Iossa of Autostrade per l’Italia highlighted that the average distance between stations is now roughly 50 km and aims to reduce it to 30 km within a year as additional sites are added.

Parliamentary deputy Fabrizio Benzoni (Azione) called for a uniform regulatory framework and competitive tendering to accelerate the rollout of highway charging infrastructure, noting that Italy lags behind the targets set by the EU Green Deal and the national recovery plan. He has submitted parliamentary questions to the minister to improve pricing and expand the number of functional highway nodes.

Separately, Poste Italiane is installing its own charging columns under the Polis project, with three new 22 kW fast chargers at its Terenzo office in Parma and a goal of 10,000 public points by 2026. The initiative aims to support regional mobility and tourism while reducing the postal group's environmental footprint.
