Italy logs 482 workplace deaths in first half of 2026, six regions red
Italy recorded 482 workplace fatalities in the first six months of 2026, of which 350 occurred on the job and 132 while commuting. The Vega Observatory, led by President Mauro Rossato, noted that the total number of deaths fell about 4 % compared with the same period in 2025, but the downward trend is losing momentum.
Six regions – Calabria, Liguria, Sicily, Campania, Umbria and Puglia – were classified as a red‑zone for occupational mortality, with Lombardy registering the highest absolute count (53 on‑the‑job deaths). Workers over 65 faced the highest risk, at 45 deaths per million employees, while foreign workers experienced an incidence of 37.1 per million. The report also highlighted a 5.5 % rise in overall injury reports, underscoring ongoing safety concerns.
Rossato warned that the situation remains an emergency and called for stronger prevention, monitoring and training measures, especially for the most vulnerable worker groups.
