West Nile virus cases rise to 84 in Italy, two deaths reported

Italy's health authorities have confirmed 84 human infections with West Nile virus up to 28 July, including two deaths. Of the cases, 37 were neuro‑invasive, 19 were identified among blood donors, and the remainder presented as fever or were asymptomatic. The outbreak spans eight regions, with Lombardy most affected (26 cases), followed by Piemonte, Veneto, Emilia‑Romagna, Lazio, Campania and others. Surveillance has also detected virus‑positive mosquitoes in Abruzzo’s Pineto, confirming ongoing viral circulation.

Public health measures include intensified monitoring of blood donations and organ transplants, heightened clinical vigilance, and advice for the public to avoid mosquito bites by eliminating standing water, using repellents and protective clothing. The Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the Ministry of Health continue weekly reporting to track the situation.
