Italy records two river drownings in Oglio and Tagliamento this week

A 28‑year‑old Senegalese man living in Pontoglio died after being swept away by the river Oglio near Brescia. He was unable to swim and was caught in a deep hole in the riverbed; rescuers were unable to revive him. The incident is the third river‑related death in the Oglio area within a month.

In Friuli‑Venezia Giulia, an Azerbaijani father drowned in the Tagliamento near Ronchis while attempting to rescue his two daughters. The fire service rescued the mother and the children, but the father's body was recovered later by divers and a rescue helicopter. Both drownings highlight ongoing safety concerns on Italy’s summer rivers, where several recent fatalities have involved young people and foreign nationals.

Local authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution when swimming in rivers, citing hidden currents, sudden drop‑offs and strong undertows that can overwhelm even experienced swimmers.
