Italy faces surge in fatal road accidents involving motorcyclists and cyclists

Italy is experiencing a surge in fatal road accidents, particularly involving motorcyclists and cyclists. In the Marche region, four motorcyclists died within a 24-hour period in separate incidents across Loro Piceno, Civitanova, and Filottrano. In the Cuneo province, a 55-year-old nurse was among ten motorcyclists killed so far in 2026.

Cyclist safety has also become a critical issue. The Asaps association reported that ten cyclists were killed in a single week, contributing to a total of 179 cyclist fatalities so far this year. In Turin, the death of a young boy on a bicycle has sparked local mobilization and calls for improved infrastructure.

Other notable incidents include a fatal crash on the Aurelia highway in Grosseto that killed a 71-year-old woman, and a tragic accident in Tezze sul Brenta where a 31-year-old man was struck by a car while leaving a wedding reception. In response to these recurring tragedies, the COSAP union is calling for increased presence and structural reinforcement of the Highway Police to improve prevention and road safety.
