Surge in fatal motorcycle and road accidents in Italy
Overview
A series of fatal motorcycle and road accidents has been reported across various regions in Italy. In Magione, a collision involving two cars and a Yamaha motorcycle resulted in the death of 30-year-old DJ Samuele ‘Sem’ Pistellini, while a 23-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries.
Subsequent reports indicate multiple fatalities in other provinces. In the Macerata area, four motorcyclists died within a 24-hour period in separate incidents across Loro Piceno, Civitanova, and Filottrano. In the Cuneo province, a 55-year-old nurse, Manolito Werner Wachtel, was killed in a collision with a van, marking the tenth motorcycle fatality in that province during 2026.
Recent data from the Asaps association indicates that September 2026 has become the deadliest month of the year so far, with 33 fatalities reported. Beyond motorcyclists, cyclists are facing increased risks; Asaps reported that ten cyclists died in a single week, contributing to a total of 179 cyclist fatalities so far this year. Notable incidents include the death of a seven-year-old boy on a designated cycle lane in Turin, which has sparked local mobilization for improved infrastructure, and injuries to professional cyclist Matilde Vitillo following a collision with a tractor in Asti.
Other recent deaths include a 71-year-old woman on the Aurelia highway in Grosseto, a 36-year-old man in Castel d'Ario, and a 31-year-old man in Tezze sul Brenta who was struck by a car while leaving a wedding reception. In response to the surge, the COSAP union is calling for an increased structural presence of the Highway Police to strengthen prevention on high-risk roads. Giordano Biserni, president of Asaps, has appealed to motorists to reduce speed and maintain safety distances.
