Italy reports surge in cocaine use and rising youth drug consumption

The 2026 annual report on addictions in Italy, covering 2025 data, describes a growing drug‑use crisis. Nearly 350,000 students under 18 (23% of that age group) said they had tried at least one illegal substance, with overall drug use among students at 26%. Cocaine was the most frequently detected drug in urban air PM10 samples and is linked to 33% of overdose deaths. The report also notes a rise in ultra‑potent THC products, 92 newly identified psychoactive substances, widespread binge‑drinking by about 380,000 minors, and gambling activity among early‑teenagers.

City‑level wastewater monitoring shows Terni has the highest heroin consumption in Italy, though heroin use is falling nationwide. Ecstasy use is slightly increasing, especially in Milan, Genoa and Bologna, while methamphetamine use grows in Rome, Cagliari and Milan. Emergency departments recorded 9,641 drug‑related admissions in 2025, a 15% rise from the previous year. The government plans increased funding and coordinated interventions to curb the trend.
