Italy restores Villa Lante gardens under PNRR funding

On 13 July 2026, the historic Renaissance gardens of Villa Lante in Bagnaia will be inaugurated after a multi‑year restoration funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The project, costing €7 million in total with €5 million allocated to the works, began in 2023 and involved multidisciplinary teams of architects, horticulturists, and conservation specialists.

Restoration work covered the entire complex: 1 350 trees were treated, parterres, hedges, lawns and understory revived, and the historic water system—including fountains, cascades and the famous “inganni”—was rebuilt with new supply lines, recycling and storage to reduce waste. Accessibility was improved with low‑impact lighting, electric‑vehicle pathways, new seating, signage and a restored secret garden now open to visitors. The initiative also includes a research programme on the site’s botanical, architectural and historical heritage, emphasizing environmental sustainability and biodiversity.

The reopening aims to preserve the garden’s cultural value while enhancing public enjoyment and educational opportunities.
