Italy investigation: Schools searched in ricin poisoning case

Investigators in Italy have concluded a series of digital forensic searches across four schools as part of an inquiry into the deaths of Antonella Di Ielsi and her daughter, Sara Di Vita. The two women died in December 2025 following ricin poisoning.

The searches, ordered by the Prosecutor of Larino, targeted educational institutions in the Molise region, including schools in Casacalenda, Riccia, and Campobasso. Authorities are analyzing centralized network infrastructure and server data to identify potential online searches related to the toxin. In Casacalenda, investigators also performed a forensic copy of a notebook used by Laura Di Vita, a teacher and cousin of the victims' father, Gianni Di Vita.

The investigation is also examining a theft of several computers from the Silvio Di Lalla high school in Casacalenda that occurred in March. While investigators are evaluating if the missing devices could have been used to research ricin, experts note that the theft does not prevent the analysis of traces left within the school's centralized network infrastructure.
