Italy school dropout rates fall, but math skills remain low

The 2026 Invalsi report indicates a 4.2% decrease in school dropout rates in Italy over the last four years. Since 2022, approximately 520,000 students at risk of dropping out have been reintegrated into the educational system, bringing the overall dropout rate down to 8.2% in 2025.

Despite this improvement in retention, the report highlights significant challenges regarding academic quality. Approximately 50% of students fail to reach even the basic level of proficiency in mathematics by the time they complete their studies.
