Italy schools face closures due to rodents and upcoming national strike

Several Italian educational institutions are facing disruptions due to hygiene concerns and labor actions. In various regions, including Lecce, Castellammare, Casamicciola Terme, and Mazara del Vallo, schools have been forced to close or have faced student protests following reports of rodent infestations. Local authorities have issued emergency ordinances to allow for disinfection and sanitation to ensure student safety.

In Bari, approximately 40 students are under observation and two have been hospitalized following symptoms of gastrointestinal distress after a school field trip. While authorities are investigating a potential food poisoning link, they have not yet confirmed a connection to the meals provided during the trip.

Additionally, a national strike called by the SISA union is scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2026. This strike affects teaching, administrative, and support staff across Italy, as well as a regional strike in Tuscany. The impact on daily lessons will depend on the level of participation at individual schools.
