Italy secures World Cup knockout berth after victory over Czech Republic
The Italian women's national basketball team has secured a spot in the knockout stages of the World Cup in Berlin, marking their first return to the top 12 in 32 years. Following a 63-54 victory over the Czech Republic in their opening match, Italy's qualification was mathematically confirmed after China defeated the Czech Republic 74-70 in overtime.
Italy's win was a hard-fought effort against a Czech side that led for more than 30 minutes. The Azzurre, coached by Andrea Capoblanco, are currently competing in Group D alongside the United States and China. While the United States is expected to win the group, Italy's upcoming match against China will determine whether they secure second place to advance directly to the quarterfinals or enter the round of 16.
This tournament represents a significant milestone for the program, which has not reached a World Cup final phase since 1994. Italy's historical best finish at the tournament remains fourth place, achieved in 1975.
