Italy sees dead turtles on beach and sidewalk, sparking wildlife protection concerns

A large marine turtle over one metre long was found dead on the Capocotta beach near Rome. Bystanders observed a plastic bag lodged in the animal's nose, indicating suffocation caused by plastic waste. The discovery prompted public outrage and renewed attention to marine plastic pollution along Italy's coastline.

In a separate incident, a dead Testudo hermanni, a protected Mediterranean land turtle, was discovered on a sidewalk in the Barriera district. Authorities suspect the animal was illegally kept and abandoned to avoid CITES documentation requirements, highlighting violations of wildlife protection laws.

Both cases underscore growing concerns over wildlife mistreatment in Italy, from marine debris harming sea turtles to illegal possession and abandonment of protected land species, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and better waste management.
