Italy tackles Siracusa water network overhaul and rising electricity bills

In Siracusa, the municipal water system recorded eleven pipe ruptures in July, prompting a rapid response from the new operator Aretusacque, which took over from Siam on 25 June. The city plans a €42 million investment to replace aging conduits, install pressure‑regulating inverters, and digitise the network, allocating €14.7 million specifically for water‑pipe renewal.

Separately, Italian electricity consumers have seen a sharp jump in July 2026 bills. The increase is not due to supplier choice but to a regulated capacity‑market charge (CDISPD) set by ARERA, which rose from €0.015531 /kWh in April–May to €0.038464 /kWh in July – a 147 % jump. The higher charge adds several euros to a typical household’s bill, reflecting higher system‑capacity costs during peak summer demand.
