Italy targets port electrification and Sicilian grid upgrades

Italy is seeking global investors to advance port electrification through 'cold ironing' technology. As shore-side power becomes mandatory by 2030, the Italian embassy in the UK hosted a workshop to attract foreign capital for the necessary infrastructure. This transition aims to reduce air pollution in port cities like Genoa, where nitrogen dioxide emissions are linked to significant premature deaths, and to improve public health by minimizing ship exhaust.

Separately, Sicily is set to receive approximately 5.3 billion euros in investments to upgrade its electrical grid. This total includes 1.8 billion euros from E-Distribuzione for local distribution networks between 2026 and 2028, and 3.5 billion euros from Terna for high-voltage transmission lines and interconnections. These investments are critical as the Sicilian grid currently faces high levels of criticality in its capacity to integrate new renewable energy sources, particularly in the provinces of Trapani, Agrigento, Nisseno, and Ennese.
