Mediterranean weather shifts toward autumnal instability

A transition in Mediterranean weather patterns is expected as high-pressure systems begin to weaken. Currently, much of Italy is experiencing mild temperatures and stable conditions due to a subtropical anticyclone. However, a cold drop moving toward Greece is expected to trigger instability across the Ionian Sea, affecting southern regions including Puglia, Calabria, and Basilicata with potential thunderstorms and marine waterspouts.

Forecast models show uncertainty regarding a North Sea disturbance. While some projections suggest the system will move toward Spain, leaving Italy stable, others, such as the ECMWF model, indicate a more eastern trajectory that could bring significant rainfall to Northwest Italy, specifically Liguria, Piedmont, and Valle d'Aosta.

Looking further ahead, a more pronounced shift toward autumnal weather is anticipated starting around October 20, with Atlantic fronts expected to bring widespread rain to the Tyrrhenian coast, Sardinia, and southern regions. Temperatures are projected to decrease following the current period of above-average warmth.
