Italy to implement automatic pension enrollment for first-time workers
Starting July 1, 2026, new regulations in the private sector will mandate automatic enrollment in supplementary pension schemes for first-time employees. A first-time employee is defined as an individual hired in the private sector who has no prior history of private-sector employment. Previous roles in public administration or self-employment do not disqualify an individual from this status.
Under the new rules established by Law 199 of December 30, 2025, employees have a 60-day window from their start date to opt out of the automatic enrollment using the TFR3 form. If no choice is communicated within this period, contributions will be directed to the pension fund designated by law. Employers are responsible for managing the information and documentation required to implement these changes correctly.
