Italy to implement diesel driving bans in key regions
Italy is implementing new driving restrictions for older diesel vehicles to combat air pollution, particularly affecting travelers from Germany. Starting October 1, 2026, Euro 5 diesel vehicles will face bans in specific regions during certain hours.
In the Lombardy region, which includes Milan, Euro 5 diesel vehicles will be prohibited from driving in municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants on weekdays between 07:30 and 19:30. In Emilia-Romagna, the restrictions apply to municipalities with more than 30,000 inhabitants between 08:30 and 18:30.
Violators face fines starting at 168 euros, plus potential administrative and delivery fees. Travelers are advised to check routes and vehicle compliance to avoid these penalties.
