Italy adjusts pension age and contribution requirements for 2027

Italy is implementing pension requirement adjustments due to changes in life expectancy. Starting January 1, 2027, the standard retirement age for old-age pensions will increase to 67 years and one month, with a further increase to 67 years and three months scheduled for 2028.

For early retirement, requirements are also shifting. Men will need 42 years and 11 months of contributions, while women will require 41 years and 11 months. The INPS has clarified rules for ‘purely contributory’ workers—those who began contributing after January 1, 1996—noting that they can access certain exit schemes like ‘isopensione’ or extraordinary allowances if their pension amount meets specific minimum thresholds at the time of departure.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education and Merit has released guidelines for school staff regarding service cessation starting September 1, 2027, emphasizing bureaucratic simplifications and the reduction of paper documentation. While structural changes are set, certain measures like ‘Ape sociale’ and ‘Quota 103’ remain subject to potential annual extensions via budget laws.
