Italy tourism gains momentum from Hotelier Day summit and Airbnb study

More than 100 participants attended the fourth Hotelier Day on 18 June 2026 at Villa Porta in Luino. Organized by Federalberghi Varese, the event highlighted high cuisine and local specialties as a key driver for tourism development. Speakers such as Federalberghi Varese president Frederick Venturi emphasized the growing demand for authentic, food‑focused experiences. The evening also saw the presentation of the Piero Colombo prize to tourism students from ISIS Valceresio di Bisuschio and Istituto Verri di Busto Arsizio.

Airbnb released the first Observatorio Teha on diffuse tourism, identifying 688 Italian small towns where its platform is the sole accommodation option. In 2025 the platform generated an estimated €836 million in economic output and created about 4,600 full‑time‑equivalent jobs across these communities. Direct guest spending reached €346 million, with a notable 79 % of visitors being foreign. Airbnb also announced a €1.5 million three‑year donation to ANCI to support local municipalities.

Both initiatives illustrate a shift toward promoting Italy’s lesser‑known destinations and leveraging culinary and home‑sharing assets to diversify tourism revenue.
