Italy transitions digital identity from SPID to Electronic Identity Card
The Italian government has initiated a gradual transition toward the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) as the primary digital identity, which will eventually reduce the functionality of the SPID system. While no official date has been set for the complete replacement of SPID, current indications suggest a transition window between 2026 and 2027.
Currently, SPID remains fully operational for accessing public services. Citizens are encouraged to ensure their CIE is valid and to check for NFC compatibility on their smartphones to facilitate use with the CieID app. The IO app is also expected to play an increasingly central role in accessing public services alongside the CIE.
