Italy Treasury to issue up to 145 billion euros in bonds by year-end
The Italian Treasury faces a significant financing challenge, needing to place approximately 100 billion euros in BTP and Bot government bonds by the end of the year. When including the technical renewal of short-term Bot instruments, the total volume of issuances to be managed through December 31 could reach between 135 and 145 billion euros.
This massive requirement coincides with a global rise in interest rates. Analysis from Citi suggests that annual interest payments on the debt could fall within a range of 90 to 110 billion euros. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has warned that a country losing control of its debt loses its ability to make choices. To mitigate potential stress in the global bond market, the Treasury is maintaining constant dialogue with Italian banks to ensure high levels of domestic holdings of government securities.
