Siena Palio: Veterinary inspections conclude for August race
Veterinary inspections for the upcoming Palio di Siena in August have concluded at the Il Ceppo clinic in Monteriggioni. A total of 108 horses were registered for the selection process, with 95 horses currently considered potential candidates to run in the race.
Dr. Carlo Alberto Minniti, head of the municipal veterinary commission, reported an overall excellent clinical and sanitary status among the horses. While many participants, including previous runners like Diodoro, Anda e Bola, and Benitos, appear to be in great condition, officials are carefully reviewing X-rays to ensure only the healthiest animals proceed. The high temperatures have been noted as a factor affecting the horses' physical state.
In addition to the municipal commission, veterinarians from the Asl Toscana Sud Est are conducting health surveillance and ensuring compliance with animal welfare standards. Their involvement began in March and will continue through the historical procession and the race itself to safeguard the animals during all stages of the event.
