Palio di Siena 2026: July delay, August draw, horses cleared

Overview

In late May, Siena issued an ordinance establishing online pre‑registration for horse owners and scheduling pre‑inspections (22‑24 June), regulated test sessions (27‑28 June) and the Tratta presentation (29 June). On 31 May the city hall drew four additional contrade—Bruco, Drago, Valdimontone and Oca—to join the six permanent participants for the July 2 race, and the captains proposed Renato Bircolotti as mossiere. June saw the municipal technical and veterinary commissions publish a detailed timetable for the veterinary pre‑examinations of 119 horses at the Il Ceppo clinic (22‑24 June). Seventeen horses were already selected for the race, twenty‑one had completed the Tratta and forty‑six passed the regulated tests. Urban bus routes were altered (24 June‑4 July) and Piazza del Campo was closed to traffic to accommodate equipment set‑up. A ceremony on 26 June unveiled the 2026 drappellone by artist Ismaele Nones and presented the Masgalano award, while confirming that regulated trials would run from 27 June to 1 July with the Tratta on 29 June. Veterinarians began health checks in March and intensified inspections at Il Ceppo (22‑24 June). The 118 emergency service prepared a rescue plan for roughly 18 000 spectators, and night trials commenced on 27 June. On 28 June the veterinary commission approved 34 horses for the Tratta batteries, assigning each to a contrada. Heavy rain on 2 July forced a postponement to 3 July; the programme remained unchanged and about 15 000 spectators were expected. Mayor Nicoletta Fabio later reviewed the race footage and defended the drappellone against personal attacks. The municipal council on 5 July drew Aquila, Onda and Giraffa for the 16 August race and confirmed Bircolotti as mossiere. On 31 July the technical and veterinary commissions cleared 1 300 horses for the August Palio, with inspections scheduled for 6‑8 August.
