Italy waste fires caused by improper battery disposal

Two separate incidents in Italy involving improper waste disposal have caused fires, highlighting the dangers of mixing electronic waste with general refuse.

In Tavullia, at the Ca’ Asprete landfill, a lithium battery discarded in unsorted waste ignited a fire covering 400 square meters. Firefighters and Marche Multiservizi operators worked to contain the blaze using excavators and earth to smother the flames. No injuries or property damage were reported, and Arpam personnel attended to conduct investigations. Local officials emphasized the necessity of correct waste separation to prevent regional hazards.

In Jesi, a JesiServizi waste collection vehicle experienced a fire after an automotive battery was incorrectly placed in the unsorted waste load. The battery overheated within the compactor, causing smoke to emerge. The driver alerted the fire department, which quickly neutralized the situation. The incident resulted in minimal damage, limited to a single scorched bag near the battery.
