Italy water safety inspections reveal 256 violations in bars and restaurants
A national inspection campaign conducted by the Carabinieri del Nas and the Ministry of Health in July revealed widespread irregularities in the treatment and service of water in Italian bars and restaurants. Out of 272 inspections performed, 147 cases (54%) were found to be non-compliant.
Authorities identified a total of 256 violations. These included one criminal offense for the sale of food with false markings and 255 administrative sanctions totaling approximately 175,000 euros. The infractions related to improper labeling of non-packaged products, hygienic-structural deficiencies, and procedural or authorization failures.
As a result of the crackdown, 2,000 liters of unfiltered drinking water and seven pieces of non-compliant equipment were seized. Additionally, 10 businesses were ordered to suspend operations due to serious hygienic or regulatory issues, representing a commercial value of roughly 4.7 million euros.
