Italy weather alert: widespread storms and temperature drop

Italy is experiencing a significant shift in weather patterns following an unusually warm period. After September recorded temperatures well above historical averages—notably in Abruzzo where averages were up to 3.40°C higher than the 1961–1990 period—a North Atlantic disturbance is bringing widespread instability.

Multiple regions are under yellow weather alerts for thunderstorms and hydrogeological risks. Heavy rainfall and intense storms are expected to impact Liguria, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, and parts of the North-East. Forecasters note that Mediterranean sea temperatures, which remain approximately 3°C above seasonal norms, are providing additional energy and moisture to these storm systems, increasing the risk of localized cloudbursts and flooding.

The incoming cold front will also cause a notable drop in temperatures across the peninsula, with maximums expected to fall to around 20°C in the North and between 22-24°C in the Center-South. While the weather will remain unstable through the middle of the week, a gradual return to stability is anticipated by the weekend.
