Italy weather emergency: floods, tornadoes, and landslides hit southern regions

Severe weather has struck southern Italy, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and structural damage. Orange weather alerts are in effect for Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, and Campania. In Melito Porto Salvo, intense rainfall exceeding 170 mm led to significant flooding, mudslides, and the displacement of vehicles near the coast; the Mayor has requested a formal declaration of a natural disaster.

In Sicily, Marsala experienced a tornado that struck a local school, causing significant damage and forcing students to take cover. The Aeolian Islands, specifically Lipari, reported severe flooding that inundated homes and trapped vehicles in port areas. In Bari, heavy rain and wind caused flooding in urban underpasses and the Basilica of Saint Nicholas.

Additional incidents include a magnitude 3.3 earthquake in the Tyrrhenian Sea near the Calabrian coast and rockfalls on State Road 145 near Castellammare di Stabia. Due to the ongoing instability, multiple municipalities have ordered the closure of schools and public facilities to ensure citizen safety.
