Italy faces weather instability and geological risks
Italy is experiencing a period of significant weather instability and heightened geological awareness. While a subtropical anticyclone is currently providing mild temperatures and sunny conditions across much of the country, meteorologists warn of upcoming shifts. Cold air masses from Eastern Europe and the Balkans are expected to bring temperature drops and increased instability, particularly along the Adriatic coast and in southern regions like Calabria and Sicily.
In response to the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, various initiatives have been launched to address Italy's hydrogeological vulnerability. The Italian Society of Environmental Geology (SIGEA) introduced a rap song titled ‘L’Italia che frana’ to educate youth on landslide and flood risks. Additionally, the ISPRA presented the ‘CITY GEO Factsheet’, a tool designed to measure the geological and climatic pressures on urban areas, highlighting significant differences in risk levels between cities like Trento and Naples.
Local authorities have also issued specific warnings. In Benevento, residents were advised to take precautions against thunderstorms and potential hydrogeological risks. In the Reggio Calabria area, recent heavy rains caused landslides, leading to the evacuation of twenty residents in San Lorenzo due to mud and structural threats to homes.
