Italy weather shifts from extreme heat to temporary stability before incoming storms

Italy is experiencing a significant weather transition. Following an exceptionally hot summer—noted by CNR-IBE as the warmest since 1950—the Azores High is currently providing stable, temperate conditions across much of the peninsula. This high-pressure system is bringing pleasant, September-like weather with temperatures generally staying below 30°C, offering a reprieve from previous extreme heatwaves.

However, this stability is temporary. Meteorologists predict a major shift starting Wednesday, September 16, as an Atlantic perturbation moves from Northern Europe toward Italy. This system is expected to bring widespread rain, thunderstorms, and a notable drop in temperatures, particularly affecting northern and central regions. In the southern Mediterranean, there is also potential for the development of a subtropical cyclone or 'medicane' near the Libyan coast, which could influence weather in southern Italy.

On a broader scale, NASA research highlights a growing trend of extreme heat events shifting into spring and autumn, suggesting that the traditional boundaries of summer are expanding due to climate change. Experts from Anbi warn that the acceleration of the climate crisis is outpacing adaptation policies, leaving regions vulnerable to hydrogeological risks as warm Mediterranean waters interact with incoming cold fronts.
