Italy weather: subtropical anticyclone brings warmth and sun
Italy is experiencing a period of atmospheric stability dominated by a subtropical anticyclone, leading to sunny weather and temperatures above seasonal averages across much of the country. Daytime highs may reach up to 30°C in several regions. However, a significant diurnal temperature range is expected, with nighttime and early morning temperatures dropping to between 12°C and 13°C, particularly in valleys and plains.
Localized instability is noted in southern areas, specifically in Sicily, due to a positive vorticity nucleus. While most of the country remains stable, weather shifts are anticipated toward the end of September and early October. Forecasts from the Air Force and meteorological models suggest that a transition toward more unsettled weather, including increased rainfall, may occur around the weekend of October 3-4, particularly affecting the Northwest and parts of Sardinia.
Long-term projections indicate that while temperatures may remain above average through much of October, the seasonal transition will bring more frequent precipitation and a gradual reduction in thermal values toward the end of the month.
