Italy weather transition: autumn rains and temperature drops expected
Italy is transitioning from summer-like stability to an autumnal weather pattern as the subtropical anticyclone begins to weaken. While early October starts with warm temperatures and sunny skies in many regions, an Atlantic trough and incoming cold air masses are expected to trigger a significant shift.
Starting around October 5 and 6, instability will increase, particularly in Sardinia, Liguria, Tuscany, and the central-northern regions. A more structured Atlantic frontal system is predicted to cross the peninsula between Wednesday and Thursday, potentially bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to central-northern areas and Campania. This shift is expected to cause a temperature drop of approximately 5 to 7 degrees Celsius.
Specific regional forecasts include potential snow at altitudes around 3000 meters in the Dolomites, increased instability in Liguria, and localized risks of heavy rain or even waterspouts near Sardinia and Corsica. Long-term models from the ECMWF suggest a more mobile and unsettled atmospheric phase will continue through mid-October, with the most significant precipitation expected along the Tyrrhenian coast and in northern regions.
