Italy wins two silvers as junior European swimming championships kick off in Munich

Italy’s junior swimming squad arrived in Munich and opened the European Championships with two silver medals in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relays – the women’s team of Alessandra Leoni, Caterina Santambrogio, Penelope Olga Lopez‑Casula and Alessandra Mao, and the men’s team of Cristian Tassan‑Caser, Andrea Lucarelli, Damiano Cappellazzo and Francesco Ceolin.

Six Italian swimmers qualified for individual finals: Bianca Nannucci and Lucrezia Domina in the women’s 200 m freestyle, Damiano Cappellazzo in the men’s 200 m freestyle, Stefano Mogno and Thomas Carapia in the men’s 200 m butterfly, and Francesco Volpe in the men’s 1500 m freestyle. The competition, running through 12 July, will feature further individual titles and relay finals, with the next day’s program including 100 m butterfly, 200 m mixed medley, 50 m freestyle, 1500 m freestyle and the mixed 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.

The Italian delegation, coached by Marco Menchinelli and comprising 40 athletes, aims to add to its medal haul as the championships continue at the Olympiaschwimmhalle in Munich.
