Italy's Volleyball Nations League: Men’s team falls to Japan, prepares for Belgium; women set for Finals vs Netherlands

The Italian men’s national volleyball team suffered its first defeat in the 2026 Volleyball Nations League, losing 2‑3 to host Japan in Osaka’s Asue Arena (26‑26, 19‑25, 20‑25, 25‑23, 12‑15). Captain Giulio Giannelli said the squad was “ready to put ourselves to the test” and will seek immediate redemption against Belgium on 16 July.

Earlier in the tournament, Italy had beaten Belgium 3‑0 in Week 3, securing a strong start to the campaign. The team now sits fifth in the overall standings with five wins, trailing Japan, Slovenia, the United States and Poland.

On the women’s side, the Italian squad will open the VNL Finals in Macau on 22 July, facing the Netherlands at 10:00 CET in the Macao East Asian Games Dome. The match will be streamed live on DAZN and VBTV as the Azurri aim to defend their title and reach the semifinals.

These fixtures keep Italy active in both the men’s and women’s legs of the Nations League as the season moves toward its final stages.
