Italy workplace accidents and diseases cost 49.2 billion euros
A report by INAIL estimates that workplace accidents and occupational diseases cost the Italian economy 49.2 billion euros in 2023. This figure represents approximately 2.31% of the national GDP.
The total cost is divided into three main categories. Prevention costs account for the largest portion at 23.3 billion euros (47%), which includes investments in personal protective equipment, safety systems, training, maintenance, and public prevention interventions. Non-insurance consequential costs are estimated at approximately 13.5 billion euros (27%).
Compared to 2009 data, recognized workplace accidents have decreased by about 37%, and the total estimated cost has fallen by roughly 14 billion euros. The report attributes this downward trend to the effectiveness of long-term prevention measures and safety policies implemented in the workplace.
