Italy workplace fatalities prompt nationwide safety priority push

Recent weeks have seen multiple worker deaths across Italy, including incidents in Colico, Galatone, Pontecorvo, Santa Maria Capua Vetere and two fatalities in the Pontine area during extreme heat. Trade union leaders, such as Sebastiano Guzzi of Unilavoro PMI and representatives of UGL Lazio and UGL Latina, have called the tragedies an emergency, urging that occupational safety become an absolute priority.

They demand stronger prevention measures, increased inspections, expanded inspector staffing, and specific heat‑related protocols such as mandatory breaks, hydration and shift adjustments during high‑temperature alerts. Regional authorities in Lazio have already tightened ordinances limiting outdoor work during peak heat periods, but unions argue that enforcement and a culture of prevention must be reinforced nationwide to avoid further loss of life.
