2026 European wine harvests start early amid record heat
Vineyards across Italy and France began the 2026 harvest weeks earlier than usual because of record‑high summer temperatures and drought. In Lombardy the harvest was advanced by 7‑10 days, while in Franciacorta the first vines were cut on 30 July, the first July harvest ever recorded. The Oltrepo Pavese region also started picking in late July, a historic first. In Abruzzo the campaign opened on 3 August with Pinot Grigio and other early varieties. French Champagne expects to begin between 20‑25 August, at least 12 days ahead of recent years, and growers in the Aude department of southern France, such as Alain Gleyzes, cut their first Muscat grapes on 30 July, also a first in a 43‑year career. The accelerated phenology is linked to extreme heat, limited rainfall and hail events that have damaged 30‑40 % of vines in some Lombardy areas. Viticultural bodies such as Coldiretti and regional officials warn of reduced yields, quality challenges and market pressure, and have proposed measures to help growers adapt to the changing climate.
