European supermarkets targeted by cyberattacks on cooling systems FAST-MOVING

A wave of cyberattacks has targeted the refrigeration and freezing systems of numerous supermarkets across Europe, causing significant food spoilage and operational disruptions. The attacks, reported on November 1 and 2, 2026, involved hackers remotely accessing industrial control units to switch evaporators to defrost mode.

In Belgium and Luxembourg, the Ahold Delhaize group reported an IT incident affecting approximately 40 Delhaize stores. Other Belgian retailers, including Carrefour, Spar, and Intermarché, also reported disruptions. In Sweden, the ICA and Coop chains experienced temperature spikes, with some freezers reportedly reaching 50 degrees Celsius. Similar incidents were reported in Ireland, Estonia, Finland, the Netherlands, and Italy, where authorities are investigating potential intrusions in Sicilian supermarkets.

Experts suggest the vulnerability lies in internet-connected cooling controllers, some of which run outdated software or use default passwords. The Belgian company Sabcobel noted that software updates alone may be insufficient, suggesting some systems require physical security modifications. The European Commission has described the attacks as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain and undermine consumer confidence.
