Italy agriculture faces billions in losses from extreme weather

Extreme weather conditions, including prolonged droughts and intense storms, have caused severe damage to Italy’s agricultural and aquaculture sectors. Coldiretti estimates that climate-related damages to Italian agriculture have exceeded three billion euros.

Specific regions report significant production declines. In Piedmont, rice production in non-irrigated areas faces potential losses of 70-80%, while corn losses are estimated at 50-60%. In Lombardy, corn harvesting losses have reached up to 30% due to the need for early harvesting. In Basilicata, overall crop yields are projected to be 15% below the five-year average. Additionally, honey production has suffered, with revenues dropping by as much as 50% in certain areas.

The aquaculture sector is also under pressure. Rising Mediterranean temperatures are complicating the management of sea farms, particularly for sea bass and sea bream.

Farmers are facing increased operational costs for energy, fertilizers, and irrigation, leading organizations like Coldiretti and Cia to call for the declaration of a state of natural calamity and more robust structural interventions to support the sector's resilience.
