Italy's Agriculture Faces €1.5 bn Losses from 2026 Heatwave

A June‑2026 heatwave in Italy has been estimated by the farmers’ union Cia to cause over €1.5 billion in damages to the agricultural sector. Extreme temperatures, water scarcity and thermal stress are projected to slash yields of maize, soy, fruit and vegetables, while livestock production could see milk output fall by about 20 % and egg production decline.

The event highlights long‑standing vulnerabilities in Italy’s agrifood system. Cia calls for three priority actions: resilient water‑infrastructure, wider adoption of precision irrigation and sensors, and accelerated varietal research and risk‑cover tools. Without a national water strategy and substantial investment, repeated damages are expected.

At the EU level, the European Commission has earmarked €56 million for emergency aid to farmers in Portugal, Romania, Cyprus, Croatia and Slovenia, and the European Parliament has adopted new rules to strengthen contracts for dairy producers. Italy also recently closed a €115 million funding call for young farmers and is expanding a 325‑million‑euro food hub in Rome to improve logistics and distribution.

Together, the climate shock and policy responses underscore the pressing need for stronger adaptation measures across Italy’s agricultural landscape.
