Italy's Alpine and Abruzzo Trails Offer New Hiking and MTB Adventures

A guided hike in Valle d'Aosta on Sunday, 2 August, will take participants from Thumel to Rifugio Benevolo (285 m), then to Lago Goletta (706 m) and optionally to Colle Bassac Deré (1 082 m). The route involves moderate walking, a steep but steady trail to the lake, and a more rugged path to the col, with a total ascent of about 1 200 m. Organisers provide transport once a minimum number of hikers is reached; participants must bring their own food and water, which is only available at the refuge.

Separately, a mountain‑bike route called “Montagna Grande” climbs from Villalago (900 m) to over 2 000 m in the Marsicani range near the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The 13‑km course gains roughly 1 700 m of elevation, passing through forested sections, open meadows and rocky limestone terrain, and includes several steep climbs and descents. The ride showcases panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the park’s landscape.
