Italy tourism: active travel, festivals, and gastronomy
Overview
Italy's tourism landscape continues to be defined by experiential, active, and nature-based travel, with a strong emphasis on regional traditions and gastronomy. Active mobility remains a core pillar, featuring e-biking hubs in South Tyrol and extensive hiking and mountain biking networks in Ponte di Legno.
Cultural and gastronomic festivals remain a primary driver of regional interest. Recent and upcoming events include the Casearia National Cheese Fair in Agnone and the Sagra della Pannocchia in Tavernelle di Panicale. Culinary diversity is further highlighted by the Irpinia Mood festival in Avellino, which focuses on food intolerances, Teglio Sapori, which showcases traditional buckwheat and pizzoccheri dishes, and the ongoing evolution of the ‘Frantoi Aperti’ event in Umbria.
The 29th edition of ‘Frantoi Aperti’ is scheduled for October 17 to November 15, 2026, celebrating the new olive oil season. Organized by the Associazione Strada dell’olio e.v.o. Dop Umbria and supported by the Umbria Region, the festival will feature guided tastings, live pressing demonstrations at active oil mills, and visits to historic villages. The 2026 program introduces new elements, including ‘Evo&Art Experience’ tours connecting DOP Umbria subzones with Franciscan heritage sites, a ‘Moto Giro’ motorcycle route, and the inaugural ‘Frantoi Aperti Trail Run.’ The event receives patronage from ENIT and Sviluppumbria to promote agro-food excellence.
Historical and cultural engagement is maintained through medieval reenactments in Castel di Casio, a Renaissance festival in Martinsicuro, and the ongoing celebration of Sambuca di Sicilia’s ten-year milestone as ‘Borgo dei borghi’. In Assisi, the Madonnari street art tradition is set to arrive for the first time to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis. Musical and sporting activities also feature prominently, including the Terre Sonore jazz festival and the 35th Marathon Bike della Brianza.
