Italy's Architecture Scene Highlights Biennale Pavilion Selection and Gardella PAC Exhibition

The Italian Ministry of Culture announced that 45 architects submitted proposals for the Italy Pavilion at the 2027 Biennale Architecture, with ten finalists moving to the final phase. The open‑call process, introduced in 2024, requires each finalist to submit detailed dossiers within 45 days. Among the ten are Massimo Alvisi and Junko Kirimoto (civic 8), professor Ezio Micelli, artist Massimo Bartolini, Emilia Sanna, firms Edera s.r.l. and From s.r.l., and the duo Sex & the City (Azzurra Muzzonigro, Florencia Andreola).

In Milan, the PAC (Palazzo dell'Arte Contemporanea) is hosting the exhibition “Architettura alla prova,” curated by architect Claudia Cavallo in partnership with the Politecnico di Milano. The show, running until 13 September, examines the work of Ignazio Gardella, whose 1954 design for the former municipal museum in the former stables of Villa Reale blended historic reconstruction with modern exhibition needs. After a period of closure, the building was restored following a 1993 mafia bombing and reopened in 1996, retaining Gardella’s original concept while adding contemporary technical solutions.
