Italy's Campi Flegrei region faces continued seismic activity and public anxiety

Italian civil protection and seismic institutes reported a strong earthquake felt across several provinces, prompting renewed public concern about the country's high seismic risk. Monitoring agencies emphasized that most quakes cause limited damage, but any perceptible tremor heightens anxiety among residents.

In the Campi Flegrei volcanic area near Pozzuoli, locals have endured a surge of tremors, with 377 events recorded in June alone. The ongoing bradyseism has lifted the ground by about four metres since the 1950s, affecting infrastructure such as the nearby metro line, which was temporarily closed after high carbon‑dioxide levels were detected in a tunnel. Residents describe living with constant shaking, some sleeping on sofas to stay ready for the next event.

The phenomenon has economic repercussions as well; earthquakes in Italy from 1968 to 2023 have incurred losses exceeding €136 billion. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, providing information to the public and preparing emergency responses if needed.
