Italy's centre-left coalition photo legacy and PD's Salis beach controversy

Italian centre-left parties have repeatedly used staged group photographs to signal unity, a practice that dates back to the 2011 Vasto picture featuring Pierluigi Bersani, Nichi Vendola and Antonio Di Pietro. Subsequent images—including a 2012 shot with Mario Monti, later gatherings with Elly Schlein, Giuseppe Conte, and the 2019 Narni photo of Nicola Zingaretti, Roberto Speranza and others—have become symbolic markers of coalition cohesion.

Separately, a paparazzi picture of Genoa mayor Silvia Salis at Forte dei Marmi, headlined "La Salis bollente," provoked an immediate PD outcry, with party members denouncing the coverage as sexist. PD officials, including Alessandra Moretti, expressed solidarity with the mayor and accused the newspaper of gender‑biased language, while also alluding to a political pact between Conte and Salis.
