Italy's centre‑right coalition says opposition in crisis after split on electoral law amendment

Vice‑premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told parliament that the opposition is in crisis, while the governing centre‑right coalition remains cohesive. Speaking after a parliamentary group meeting on the electoral law, Tajani said the majority “always finds agreement” and criticised the centre‑left for lacking a unified stance on issues such as the war in Ukraine.

Senate President Ignazio La Russa commented on the same amendment, noting that the bicameral system allows the Senate to correct the Chamber’s vote if the result stemmed from an “injury” such as absences. He warned that if deeper reasons caused the split, a serious political reflection would be needed. La Russa also rejected claims that the vote threatened the government's majority, emphasizing that it was not a confidence vote and that secret voting rules differ between chambers.
